0800-1630, Monday through Friday

The Cytogenetic Technologist utilizes independent judgment in performing both routine and complex laboratory tests using a variety of techniques, instrumentation, and equipment in order to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Exercises professional judgment in order to prioritize and evaluate varying test requests efficiently.


Cytogenetic technical and computer skills required for the cytogenetic laboratory include:

  • Accessioning samples accurately in laboratory information system
  • Preparation of reagents used in routine and complex laboratory procedures
  • Performing tissue culture, assessing quality of samples submitted, cell harvesting and preparation of slides for analysis
  • Use of aseptic technique
  • Demonstrates proficiency in maintenance and use of various types of microscopes
  • Demonstrates proficiency in operating, cleaning, and maintenance of laboratory
  • instrumentation

Bachelor of Science degree, with certification/registry or eligibility, at the Technologist/Medical

Laboratory Scientist level with an accredited agency (ASCP).    


Interpersonal and communication skills needed for interaction with all members of the health care team.


Experience preferred, but not required to apply include:

  • Cytogenetic analysis of aneuploid and structural abnormalities in G-banded chromosome preparations.
  • Familiarity with computerized image analysis including capturing images and preparing karyotypes
  • FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) analysis.
  • Microarray or other genetic molecular analysis experience
