Respiratory careers

At Akron Children’s, respiratory therapists, physicians and nurses come together to form efficient, empowered teams. With respiratory care as your focus, you’ll find a diverse patient population and settings that require quick thinking. There’s also the delicate nature of the work—tending to preemies that are as small as two pounds.

Here, respiratory therapists cover the NICU, PICU, ER, transport, burn and other patient care units throughout our hospitals. They also attend high-risk deliveries and are part of the transport team. The ability to float as necessary is expected, as is always being on top of your game.

Because catching things quickly is imperative in respiratory care, superior evaluation skills, a calming nature and the ability to clearly explain procedures that can cause anxiety for children and their families are key.

As challenging as the responsibilities are, our therapists discover there’s more to their jobs because of the connections they form. Our focus is clear: we’re all about the kids. We treat every child as we would our own. And when you treat everyone like family, it becomes more than a job.

Adam Conner

Burn Center Nurse

“Children’s education assistance has helped me tremendously. It makes me feel like I have the opportunity to advance my career. If worked elsewhere, I might not have had that chance.

I love it here. I really can’t picture myself anywhere else.

I’m inspired by the patients. I’m inspired by the employees I work with. And that inspires me to be a better nurse, to reach for goals in my own life and to push my patients toward their goals.”
