Summary: The Director of Chaplaincy Services delivers spiritual care to patients, families, and staff of the hospital and administers the department. This role encompasses leadership, management, and the development of spiritual care programs, ensuring the integration of spiritual care into the overall healthcare experience.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management:

  • Champion the department and serve as the institution's chaplain, modeling empathy and compassion.
  • Support Administration in considering moral, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of leadership.
  • Ensure availability and flexibility, including 24/7 backup duties and disaster event management.
  • Supervise staff chaplains, contract chaplains, students, and volunteers; provide direction, coaching, training, and development.
  • Oversee the department budget and control expenditures; liaise with the Foundation for donor opportunities.
  • Represent the hospital in the community and spearhead events.
  • Collaborate with various departments and leaders to assess and address patient, family, and staff needs; stay attuned to organizational needs.

Spiritual Care:

  • Offer culturally competent spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff of varying faith traditions or no faith.
  • Develop and lead inter-faith prayer and worship opportunities, memorial services, and rituals.
  • Conduct spiritual assessments and create care plans addressing age-appropriate and developmental-specific needs.
  • Educate staff, local clergy, and the community about the spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Elevate awareness of the role of spiritual and religious values in patient care.

Program Management:

  • Establish department goals in alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Implement the strategic vision for the department.
  • Manage all programming of the department, including services and education.
  • Ensure departmental representation on hospital committees.
  • Lead the Schwartz Center Program and facilitate Schwartz Center Rounds.
  • Develop and lead quality improvement initiatives.

Administrative Duties:

  • Prepare and distribute monthly on-call schedules for Akron and Mahoning Valley Campus.
  • Schedule meetings, rooms, and coordinate schedules of staff members.
  • Maintain the Chaplaincy Office, Spiritual Care Center, and Meditation Room; oversee inventory of supplies, literature, and resources.
  • Process purchase orders, expense forms, invoices, and maintain accounting information.
  • Generate and approve payroll for contract chaplains and staff chaplains.

Technical Expertise:

  • Experience in providing spiritual care for all age groups.
  • Experience in leading and managing chaplaincy staff.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software; Epic software preferred.
  • Knowledge of current research in the field of Spiritual Care.

Education and Experience:

  • Education: Master of Divinity degree or related field required. Four units of clinical pastoral education required, with at least two units in a pediatric setting preferred.
  • Certification: Certification from the Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, National Association of Jewish Chaplains, or other national chaplaincy certifying body required.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience preferred. Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.
