Summary:
The Laboratory Supervisor has the responsibility for planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of all technical and/or operational activities and staff members in the department(s) assigned to them. This position is responsible for performing duties so as to operate the lab with the highest quality safety and integrity, and in an efficient, economical and businesslike manner.Responsibilities:
1. Testing duties:
· Performs appropriate analytical testing procedures with accuracy and precision
· Demonstrates scientific knowledge of testing principles, analytic procedures and their results allowing for appropriate interpretation in conjunction with disease and physiology
· Integrates multiple types of data to resolve problems
· Implements, monitors, and/or performs quality control, new equipment and/or methods
· Performs tasks efficiently and maintains work area
· Participates in educational efforts of the department
· Maintains timely completion of training, all competencies, and required Continuing Education Units
2. Technical Supervision:
· Establishes and utilizes Supervisor Review, identifying suspicious findings and implementing corrective action
· Maintains accuracy and validity of test results performed by technical staff especially during problem resolution
· Provides sound technical guidance in problem resolution as well as appropriate follow-up to all departmental personnel
· Encourages and requires adherence to proper techniques and procedures including safety
· Demonstrates initiative in identifying technological, procedural and/or managerial changes occurring in the field and in applications for the laboratory
· Informs all appropriate personnel promptly regarding changes and/or problems with test procedures or instruments
3. Training and development:
·Oversees initial training, annual competency, and training for newly implemented procedures/equipment
· Aids in professional development of supervisory / senior staff
· Must be accessible at all times testing is performed to provide onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems
· Develops or aids in the development of departmental policies
· Assesses and utilizes personnel resources effectively
4. Quality Assurance Program Maintenance:
· Implements and/or maintains internal and external QA program
· Implements process improvement activities
· Identifies problems and/or trends and brings to attention of Medical Director and/or Laboratory Manager
· Implements and documents corrective action
· Submits appropriate quality assurance data to appropriate individual(s)
· Maintains departmental manuals, complying with requirements of regulating agencies
5. Human Resources Management: Demonstrates the skills associated with efficient management of human resources
· Interviews and selects qualified staff
· Job expectations / competencies are current, well communicated to employees and monitored
· Maintains electronic time keeping systems according to hospital procedures
· Schedules & maintains adequate staffing to provide coverage for all areas of the department
· Sets the tone for a productive, professional work environment
· Is an effective communicator assuring staff is well informed on corporate, divisional and unit/department plans, goals and objectives
· Addresses performance issues appropriately while treating employees consistently, fairly and respectfully. Complies with all aspects of employment law
· Provides for comprehensive, effective orientation of new hires and pursues learning needs of staff on an ongoing basis
· Promotes diversity with regards to staffing, employee input and participation, and other initiatives that influence the work climate in the area.
6. General Management Responsibilities: Carries out the leadership and administrative responsibilities of management in an accurate, timely and results oriented manner.
· Demonstrates support for the mission, vision, policies, programs and other initiatives of the organization and their division
· Plans, manages and or assures efficient completion of processes, projects, work, etc. for assigned responsibilities. Institutes audit and controls to monitor progress
· Assures functional compliance with applicable laws, regulatory agencies (including
CAP), and other governing bodies.
· Maintains appropriate committee participation and offers constructive feedback on the issues affecting the organization
· Maintains current knowledge base in applicable areas and pursues additional education, training, and experiences as appropriate
· Completes required paperwork and other administrative requests in a timely, accurate and complete manner.

Other information:
Technical Expertise
1. Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation, quality control, quality assurance, and safety precautions in the field of medical technology is required
2. Skill in the operation, calibration and routine maintenance of modern laboratory equipment and instrumentation is required
3. Ability to provide technical consultation to physicians and nurses is required
4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing is required
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships is required
6. Experience working with all levels within an organization is required
7. Experience in healthcare is required
8. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.
9. Experience with Soft Lab Software is preferred
Education and Experience
1. Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology / Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent degree at the bachelors level or higher is required
2. Certification: Certification as a MT / MLS from ASCP, NCCLS, or equivalent is required
3. Years of relevant experience: 3-5 years is preferred
4. Years of experience supervising: 2-5 years is preferred
5. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.
