The Akron Children’s Student Nurse Technician Program is designed for nursing students graduating in December 2025 or May 2026. This program is your gateway to building experience, connections, and confidence in a dynamic health care environment with opportunities for long-term employment.

Gain valuable experience: Nursing students will provide direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse, offering hands-on experience in pediatric patient care.
Find your fit: Practice in units such as neonatal and pediatric intensive care, emergency departments, the burn center, acute care, and specialty care (medical, surgical, hematology/oncology, behavioral health). Some units provide care for adult patients, allowing you to gain broad competencies and experience across diverse patient populations. Locations include Akron, Canton, and Boardman.
Flexible employment: Positions are unit-based PRN roles, offering flexibility during school semesters and breaks.

Program Details

What is the purpose of the program?
This program provides nursing students with hands-on experience in a pediatric care environment while working under the direction of a registered nurse. It also helps participants build connections within the organization to support career growth as they transition into RN roles after graduation. Successful completers of the student technician program will be guaranteed interviews for open staff nurse positions.

When does the program start?
Start dates are available in May and June 2025.

Orientation and Role Expectations

What are the orientation expectations?
During the summer orientation, participants will:
• Commit to a general nursing orientation and role-specific training, which may require full-time, day-shift hours.
• Work a minimum of 24 hours per week alongside a preceptor.
• Learn the nurse technician role, responsibilities, and unit-specific diagnoses.
• Contribute to family-centered care as an active member of the care team.

What are the ongoing position expectations?
After orientation, participants will work PRN during school semesters and breaks with flexible scheduling. Responsibilities include:
• Completing vital signs and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs).
• Acting as a patient care companion, ensuring a safe environment.
• Performing skills such as obtaining blood sugars, removing IVs and catheters, and conducting 12-lead EKGs.

Eligibility and Application

Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must:
• Be enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate or associate RN program.
• Have completed at least one clinical rotation.

What’s the application deadline?
Applications must be submitted by February 1, 2025.
