Summary:

Provides essential dispatch communications. Responsible for maintaining effective and efficient communications between the dispatch center, officers, other department personnel, outside emergency and law enforcement agencies, and the public. The Public Safety Dispatcher also plays a vital role in records maintenance. Upholds the mission, vision, values and customer service standards of Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron (CHMCA).


Responsibilities:

1. Performs duties related to police dispatcher.

2. Operates computers and standard office equipment including commonly used computer software programs.

3. Must have the ability to: Work under pressure. Communicate effectively with angry, emotional and excited persons via telephone. Remain calm under high pressure, critical and extremely busy circumstances. Maintain confidentiality or records and information. Effectively multitask by listening, talking, and typing at the same time.

4. Monitors cameras and alarms.

5. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor or Command Staff.


Other information:

Technical Expertise
1. Experience operating Computer Aided Dispatch equipment (CAD) by entering call information and dispatching assigned units to emergency and non-emergency situations.

2. Experience recording and maintains patrol line-ups to correctly reflect patrol personnel on duty and corresponding assigned sectors.

3. Must be able to effectively communicate – written and verbal

4. Track multiple pieces of information at one time and conduct follow-up as necessary.

5. Must be able to act and react to emergency and/or threatening situations in a manner consistent with the law, policies and procedures.

Education and Experience
1. Must be 18 years of age or older at time of hire.

2. High School Diploma or equivalent.
a. Possess one or more 9-1-1 Dispatcher Certifications, including, but not limited to National Emergency Communication Institute (NECI), Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO), Powerphone Law Enforcement Dispatch Certification, or Cuyahoga Community College Emergency Dispatcher Certificate. In lieu of a dispatch certification, candidate must have a minimum of two years of police/fire/ems dispatch experience. Candidate must obtain a dispatch certification within 90 days of hire.

3. Must be able to obtain LEADS operator certification within 60 days of hire and maintain certification throughout employment.

4. Successfully complete a thorough background investigation.

5. Demonstrate psychological fitness evaluated by a Psychologist designated by the Department of Public Safety Director and Chief.
