Summary:

The role of the Genetic Counseling Assistant is to perform administrative and basic duties necessary to assist genetics providers (genetic counselors, geneticists, and nurse practitioners) in providing counseling and risk assessment for genetic conditions to patients and families.

Responsibilities:

1. Assist in case preparation, by obtaining family history and medical records and synthesizing information prior to genetic appointments

2. Research hospital medical records for information requested by physicians, insurance companies, & families

3. Create and update family pedigrees

4. Coordinate genetic testing by completing test requisition forms, responding to inquiries from genetic testing laboratories, following up with families regarding need for additional samples, and assisting in tracking test results

5. Help provide families with cost and billing information for genetic testing

6. Assist with clinical follow up after visits such as requesting medical records, confirming referrals, and updating families on status of testing

7. Write letters of medical necessity and complete other paperwork, documentation, and phone calls for health insurance coverage of genetic testing

8. With guidance from providers, communicate normal or updated test results to patients and physicians by phone and/or in writing.

9. Assist in clinical investigations in genetics by performing literature searches

10. Manage genetic test kit inventory

11. Attends Division Meetings and other relevant meetings, as requested

12. Printing, faxing, scanning, and mailing documents

13. Assists with appointment scheduling process

14. Assist in research projects, data collection and data entry

15. Assistance with various other projects as needed by the department

Other information:

Technical Expertise

  1. Demonstrated customer service skills, specifically strong oral and written communication skills, are essential.
  2. Candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, demonstrate efficiency in prioritizing assignments, demonstrate problem solving abilities, and be able to multi-task preferred.
  3. Experience with Microsoft Office products required.
  4. Experience in health care or interest in entering genetic counseling or genetics field preferred

1. Education: Bachelor's degree required.

2. Licensure: None

3. Certification: None

4. Years of relevant experience: experience in health care or interest in entering genetic counseling or genetics field preferred

5. Years of supervisory experience: None
