Summary:

The Life Safety Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, coordination, oversite, and sustainment of the Life Safety program for all Akron Children's Hospital facilities throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania. The position will be located primarily at the main campus in Akron; however, supervision and implementation of the programs at all facilities is part of the responsibilities associated with this position. This position requires a thorough understanding of healthcare life safety, regulatory and technical issues, good problem solving, good communication and conflict resolution skills. This position ensures that all facilities life safety programs are managed and maintained in a safe and effective manner. 

Responsibilities:

1. Adds value as a key member of the Compliance & Life Safety team, working collaboratively with the Facilities department and Planning, Design & Construction; understands regulatory compliance, all forms of life safety compliance strategies and the key components of excellent customer service.

2. Oversees, in coordination with Facilities and Construction teams, all operations associated with life safety, including but not limited to the development, coordination and implementation of mandatory testing frequencies, schedules and documentation. Develops and executes strategies to correct all deficiencies.

3. Demonstrates a high level competence in Healthcare Life Safety standards and associated codes (NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code, 2012).

4. Serves as the subject matter expert in Life Safety code standards and associated Joint Commission Life Safety Chapters and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) tags.

5. Works in constant coordination with all entities at both on and off-site locations for Life Safety and code compliance.

6. Coordinates a multi-disciplinary team to prepare, complete and manage all facilities and construction related permitting processes on a daily basis, including but not limited to Construction Risk Assessments, Method of Procedures, Ceiling Access Permits, Hot Work Permits, Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM), etc.

7. Handles observations and walk-throughs of sites identifying any safety concerns, including Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) as needed. Provides oversight to ICRA measures identified on risk assessments for construction projects.

8. Escorts ODH, Fire Marshall, local fire departments, and other Authority Having Jurisdictions (AHJs) when needed.

9. Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that conform to all regulatory standards; meets with practitioners and hospital staff to explain and facilitate methods and training to meet standards.

10. Works with hospital departments, nursing, medical and support services leadership to coordinate and support an overall life safety plan and strategy.

11. Provides direction, coaches, trains, develops, and manages performance to company goals and expectations.

12. Provide education and training for staff and contractors on life safety topics, including but not limited to: construction within a healthcare setting, fire stopping, life safety compliance, ILSM, etc.

13. Provides staff and management direction and education when needed.

14. Communicates issues to both internal and external hospital departments and contacts.

15. Follows and enforces building codes, NFPA, environmental, life safety regulations & Joint Commission and CMS Regulations

16. Manages life safety & compliance documentation to meet Joint Commission, CMS, and regulatory requirements.

17. Reviews and maintains all compliance documentation for Life Safety and Environment of Care.

18. Travel to Akron Children's locations throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania.

19. Other duties as required.

Other information:

1. Experience with building codes, NFPA, environmental, and life safety regulations is required.

2. Experience with Joint Commission and CMS regulatory bodies is required.

3. Experience working effectively with all levels within an organization is required.

4. Experience writing and implementing procedures and protocols is required.

5. Strong communication, both verbal and written, required.

6. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills required.

7. Excellent spelling and grammar for drafting and editing Executive-level correspondence, presentations and written projects required.

8. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint] or similar software is required. High level of proficiency with CMMS software is required.

9. High level of proficiency with CMMS software, and the ability to read blueprints/construction documents preferred.

Education and Experience

1. Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Fire Safety, Safety, Architecture, or related field is preferred

2. Additional education and certifications such as CLSS-HC, ICRA, etc. may be required within 2 years of hire

3. Extensive knowledge of NFPA – 101 Life Safety Code (2012) and NFPA – 99 (2012) is preferred.

4. Years of relevant experience: 1 year is required; at least 3 years preferred.

5. Healthcare experience preferred.

6. Valid driver's license required.
