Summary:

Paralegal is responsible for assisting the attorneys with legal projects designed to support the Hospital mission and provides litigation support, preparing and collecting legal and corporate documents, discovery, performing research, and monitoring litigation filed against Children's or its affiliates and maintaining communication with Hospital personnel, outside legal counsel, insurance agents and others regarding legal issues as assigned.


Responsibilities:
1. Works directly with General Council and attorneys to perform a broad range of responsibilities that encompass timely and complex preparation for legal filings for litigation, claims, related business correspondence, case preparation, anticipated litigation, and formal requests.

2. Investigates claims and drafts responses to the EEOC and OCRC complaints.

3. Coordinates the logistics of attending trials, reserving office space, transporting exhibits and documents, and sets up computers and other needed equipment.

4. Handles communication with external counsel on multiple issues.

5. Drafts responses to interrogatories and requests for production relative to pending litigation and claims. Also responsible for drafting motions to quash subpoenas as required.

6. Review complaints and interrogatories prior to in-house counsel's review.

7. Schedules meetings and depositions with hospital staff and defense counsel, as well as scheduling employees and managers for preliminary preparations for depositions, interviews and trials.

8. Attends mediations and trials as requested and prepares written summaries.

9. Reviews and presents for settlement authority to insurance providers.

10. Manages and maintains litigation and claims files.

11. Assists outside legal counsel with respect to discovery in pending litigation.

12. Facilitates active and efficient management of subpoenas requests for staff.

13. Collaborates with hospital attorneys to prepare and file objections to subpoenas and other motions.

14. Provide education to employees regarding subpoena obligations.

15. Remain up to date in regards to legal matters pertaining to employment law and other related regulations to ensure the Hospital is in compliance.

16. Monitors Hospital professional and general liability programs.

17. Compiles and prepares certificates of insurance and claims history for physicians, medical staff, employees and properties.

18. Reports claims made against the Hospital and/or its employees to the relevant insurers and works collaboratively with the insurers to manage the claims

19. Prepares notices for insurance carriers.

20. Involved in securing attorneys to defend claims and in setting reserves for claims

21. Communicates case status to Hospital Administration and he captive insurance company's board of directors.

22. Participates in settlement discussions.

23. Guides and actively participates in the investigation of potential claims, involving other staff and outside resources as necessary.

24. Other duties as required.

Other information:
Technical Expertise
1. Ability to maintain security of corporate activities and confidential personnel action.

2. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and written.

3. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to interact and maintain relationships with personnel, outside legal counsel, insurance agents and staff members

4. Experience working with all levels within an organization is preferred.

5. Experience in healthcare is preferred.

6. Paralegal must have strong computer and database management skills.

7. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.

Education and Experience
1. Education: Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Assistant, or related.

2. Certification: Certificate in Paralegal studies preferred.

3. Years of experience: Minimum 5 years relevant experience.

4. Years of experience supervising: None.
