The Surgical Subspecialty PA provides comprehensive care to patients requiring surgical interventions. This role includes pre-operative evaluations, post-operative management, and coordination of care in collaboration with surgeons and healthcare teams. The PA ensures high-quality care through patient assessments, education, and follow-up, supporting optimal surgical outcomes and family-centered care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive health assessments of patients presenting for surgical care, including detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and developmental assessments. Identify and diagnose surgical conditions and complications using evidence-based practices, interpreting lab results, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests. Develop differential diagnoses in collaboration with surgeons to confirm the need for surgical intervention.
- Conduct thorough pre-operative evaluations, including risk assessments, patient readiness evaluations, and coordination of necessary pre-surgical diagnostic tests such as blood work, imaging, and consults with anesthesiology or other relevant specialties.
- Provide pre-surgical counseling and education to patients and families regarding the surgical procedure, anesthesia, potential risks, and post-operative expectations.
- Where applicable, assist surgeons during procedures by functioning as a first assist in the operating room, handling tasks such as suturing, tissue retraction, and controlling bleeding.
- Monitor patient status during surgery in collaboration with the surgical and anesthesiology teams.
- Provide post-operative care management, monitoring patient recovery, and managing acute post-surgical complications such as infections, bleeding, or pain. Conduct post-operative rounds to assess patient recovery and address complications or concerns.
- Conduct outpatient follow-up visits to monitor patient recovery, remove surgical staples or sutures, assess wound healing, and provide post operative care. Develop long-term care plans, coordinating additional therapy, rehabilitation services, or further surgical interventions if necessary.
- Provide detailed, clear, and compassionate education to patients and their families regarding the child's surgical condition, treatment options, and recovery process. Address family concerns and questions pre- and post-operatively, ensuring that they understand discharge instructions, medication administration, and follow-up schedules.
- Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care.
- Serve as a mentor and educator for nursing staff, medical students, and residents rotating through surgical subspecialties.
- Provide emergency triage and stabilization in collaboration with surgical team for patients presenting with acute surgical conditions when applicable.
Education and Experience:
1. Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
2. Board certification through the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
3. Current unrestricted Ohio license as a Physician Assistant
4. Must obtain/maintain adequate continuing education hours per board requirements.
5. Current healthcare provider BLS & NRP training is required. PALS may also be required.
6. Must obtain credentialing as an active member of medical staff and appropriate medical staff privileges.
7. DEA for prescriptive authority required.
