Summary:
The Orthopedic Technician I works under the direct supervision of a Physician or Advanced Practice Provider, assisting in a patient's orthopedic plan of care. This position is responsible for maintaining patient flow, providing orthopedic patient care, and educating patients, patient families, and peers.
Responsibilities:
1. Maintains patient flow, rooming and assisting patients and patient's families, along with providing assistance to the physician or APP.
2. Assists in cast application or removal under the supervision of the physician or APP.
3. Apply and adjust braces under the supervision of the physician or APP.
4. Ability to place orders in the EMR for radiographs, cast removal and application, and the application of braces per physicians or APP's last note. These are then cosigned by the provider.
5. Fully understand sterile techniques for wound care, pin removal, joint injections, and suture/ skin staple removal.
6. Completes patient documentation and encounter forms, answers patient and family questions, and supplies patients with proper printed materials as ordered by the physician or APP.
7. Proper documentation of orthopedic pathways and charging documentation for cast and brace applications.
8. Observes and documents patient progress and reports any complications or concerns to the Orthopedic Team.
9. Educates patients and families on post-procedure care, including the importance of follow-up appointments and any specific instructions for casts or splint care. May also provide education on dressing changes, exercises, and crutch or walker training.
10. Answers questions from patients and families dealing with fractures or orthopedic surgeries providing emotional support and ensuring comfort and safety.
11. Maintains and cleans orthopedic equipment, such as casting tools, braces, and splints.
12. Ensure all equipment is sterilized and in working order and rooms are clean and organized for the next patient.
13. Responsible for following all regulations set out by governing bodies including but not limited to OSHA, HIPAA and JACHO.
14. Other duties as assigned.
Other information:
Technical Expertise
1. Basic knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
2. Excellent patient care and interpersonal skills.
3. Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a healthcare team.
4. Ability to stay organized and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
5. Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred, preferably in orthopedics.
6. Experience working at all levels within an organization required.
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word or similar software is required.
8. EMR experience preferred.
Education and Experience
1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an allied health program (LPN, Medical Assistant, Athletic Trainer, Surgical Technician, Paramedic or EMY basic) is preferred.
2. Certifications: BLS required.
3. Years of Experience: 0 years' experience required. 1 to 2 years' experience preferred.
