Living in Northeast Ohio

More than a job. A place to live your best life.

It’s a great mix of rural, urban and suburban living. A taste of all four seasons. And the fact that whether you’re a new college grad, an established professional or a retiree settling in, Northeast Ohio has something for everyone.

Cost of living

Northeast Ohio is consistently ranked one of the most affordable regions in the U.S. You’ll find more home (and yard) for your money. A reasonable cost of living makes it possible to have fun after work, take vacations and save for the future. And our business economy is thriving - making life in Northeast Ohio as cost-effective as it is crowd-pleasing.

Accessibility

Whether you’re coming or going, Northeast Ohio is easy to navigate. Akron Canton Airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport provide access to a number of airline carriers. Greyhound bus service is available from Akron and Amtrak rail service is available from Cleveland or Alliance, Ohio. Just looking to get around town? Traffic jams are not a common problem in Northeast Ohio, so long commutes are not an issue. Regardless of whether you choose to live downtown or out in the country, getting to work is normally quick and stress-free.

Food & dining

What’s there to eat? Northeast Ohio metro areas like Akron and Cleveland (even Columbus is a quick drive) offer diverse dining options—everything from new and spicy to classic and comfortable. Try Nepalese, Mexican and Thai, or pull up to Swensons Drive-in. From out on the town to take-out for your condo, corner deli to swanky steakhouse, eats in Ohio will leave you with a taste for more.

School districts

Family-centric living in Northeast Ohio means we’re focused on our children’s education. Several schools in the region have been ranked in the top 30 on U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools in Ohio list. And with a large selection of public and private schools, both pre-college and pre-tech school students have the support and resources they need to prepare for a future that’s right for them. Akron Children’s is proud and excited to partner with Akron Public Schools through our Akron Children’s Hospital Academy of Health and Human Services at North High School. This career-focused school offers high schoolers pathways in healthcare operations, early childhood education, biomedical science and allied health. In addition to a $250,000 commitment that can be used for anything to enhance the students’ experiences, we have also pledged $150,000 for in-kind services such as internships, teacher externships, white-coat experiences, speakers, job shadowing and other programs.

Things to do

The Greater Akron area has fun for all lifestyles. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the state’s only national park, is just 20 minutes from Akron but seems worlds away. Thrillseekers can enjoy a day spent at America’s Roller Coast—Cedar Point—or a weekend of camping, fishing or kayaking along Lake Erie’s hundred-mile shoreline. Time off is more fun because everything’s so close in Northeast Ohio. There are a number of Lake Erie beaches to choose from, all perfect for a day trip or overnight visit. And winter brings a wealth of outdoor pastimes from skiing, snowboarding and skating to snowmobiling, sledding and ice fishing. Feeling indoorsy? Take your pick of art and science museums, the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, casinos and music venues.

Spring, summer and fall in Northeast Ohio offer a variety of music, culture, arts and food festivals for all ages. You can listen to acoustic music or watch Shakespearean theatre. Head to Columbus (the state’s capital) for historic tours, concerts and even more dining options. Or cheer on a number of professional and semi-pro sports teams.

Fun for sports fans

Northeast and Central Ohio have a number of professional, semi-pro and NCAA sports teams offering fun for fans and families. In less than an hour’s drive, you can visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame, or catch the Cleveland Cavaliers, Browns or Indians games. The Rubber Ducks (the Indians’ AA affiliate) are right around the corner from the Akron Children’s campus. Head to Columbus to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes and Blue Jackets or soccer matches featuring the Columbus Crew, as well as exciting international teams.

Community involvement and volunteerism

Our community is what makes us strong and we strive to give back in many ways. That’s why we hold a number of hospital—and employee—sponsored events with opportunities to stay engaged and involved in the area you call home. Check out our Working at Akron Children’s page to learn more.
